2021 July - 87 articles

Cover Story: Early childhood is recognized as a critical period for the development of foundational movement skills (FMS). Play is suggested to be an important context for child development and FMS. Many young children spend a significant amount of time in early childhood education settings (preschool). At preschool, children can access free play through several recess periods each day. This study sought to examine the association between play behaviors during preschool recess and FMS. The findings suggest that the type of play behaviors young children engage in during recess are associated with FMS, with more time spent in active games without equipment associated with higher total and locomotor FMS scores.
