Cover Story: The examination of beneficiated Kentucky coal–combustion fly ash revealed a wide variety of minerals and Al-Si glass particles. Among the critical-element-bearing minerals were zircons and associated mineral phases. The illustrated cross-section can be divided into three sub-sections. The upper third, the rim of the grain, consists of sub-100-nm grains of fergusonite, zircon, yttriaite, and baddeleyite. The middle section contains porous metamict zircon, and the lower third is part of a 2-μm-wide zircon grain. The element maps show that, while Zr is present throughout the section, Y is particularly concentrated in the top third (yttriaite, fergusonite). View this paper
