As water scarcity is spreading throughout arid and semi-arid regions of the world, seawater desalination is becoming a more frequent solution to reach local water demands. The by-product brine of the process often gets discharge directly into coastal environments, however the impacts on the local coastal environment and the mixing potential of the high-density brine is poorly understood. In this study, we show the effects of brine discharge in a case-study from Carlsbad (CA, USA) and highlights the importance of brine discharge management to ensure proper dilution and mixing with coastal water.
