Cover Story: Communities in complex networks are often defined by more than edge density. In this review, we develop a cycle-aware perspective, demonstrating how motifs, non-backtracking structure, renewal random walks, Hodge methods, and higher-order learning capture different forms of cyclic organization. The review also emphasizes statistical validation: cycle enrichment can reflect true communities, but it can also arise from degree heterogeneity or latent geometry. Reproducible experiments compare these representations across sparse and geometric regimes and highlight when cycle-aware methods help, when they do not, and how to validate them responsibly. View this paper
