Vitamins and Minerals in Immune Homeostasis: From Molecular Pathways to Clinical and Translational Applications
This special issue belongs to the section "Nutritional Immunology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Micronutrients, including vitamins and minerals, are fundamental regulators of immune homeostasis, acting across molecular, cellular, and clinical levels to maintain balanced immune responses. Adequate micronutrient status supports immune cell development, antigen presentation, cytokine signaling, redox homeostasis, and metabolic reprogramming, while deficiencies contribute to immune dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and increased susceptibility to infections and immune-mediated diseases. Growing evidence highlights the pleiotropic actions of key vitamins (A, C, D, E, B-complex) and minerals (zinc, selenium, iron, copper, magnesium) through pathways involving NF-κB, Nrf2, JAK/STAT, epigenetic regulation, and immune metabolism. In parallel, micronutrients critically shape gut microbiota composition and activity, thereby modulating mucosal immunity, intestinal barrier integrity, and systemic immune responses via host–microbe interactions and microbiota-derived metabolites. This Special Issue aims to provide an integrated molecular, clinical, and translational perspective on micronutrient–immune interactions across the lifespan and in conditions such as aging, metabolic disorders, chronic inflammation, autoimmunity, and infectious diseases. We welcome original research and authoritative reviews addressing mechanisms, microbiota-mediated effects, clinical trials, nutritional interventions, biomarkers, and personalized strategies to optimize immune function through targeted micronutrient modulation.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
