Precision Nutrition and Host Health: Microbiome-Targeted Therapeutics
This special issue belongs to the section "Prebiotics, Probiotics and Postbiotics".
Special Issue Information
The human gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms that collectively perform essential biochemical functions, including the fermentation of dietary substrates and the production of short-chain fatty acids, vitamins, and other metabolites that influence the host’s physiology. This microbial community engages in bidirectional communication with the host through several interconnected pathways. Recent advances in metagenomic and metabolomic technologies have revealed that the gut microbiome profoundly influences digestion, immune system development, energy metabolism, and protection against pathogens. Dysbiosis has been linked to numerous conditions, including metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, neurological conditions, and cancer.
This Special Issue will focus on the intricate interplay between nutrition, the gut microbiota, and human health outcomes. Key areas of emphasis include how dietary patterns and specific nutrients shape microbial composition and function, the role of microbial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids in modulating host immunity and metabolism, and the therapeutic potential of microbiota-targeted interventions, including probiotics, prebiotics, and dietary modifications. Evidence supports the notion that precision nutrition targeting the gut microbiota represents a promising frontier for optimizing individual health outcomes through personalized dietary interventions.
We aim to translate the evolving knowledge of diet–microbiome–host interactions into precision nutrition frameworks that strategically modulate the gut microbiota to enhance health and mitigate disease.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
