Life Cycle Thinking in the Agri-Food Sector—Advancing Sustainability, Circularity, and Environmental Assessment
This special issue belongs to the section "Food Security and Sustainability".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The agri-food sector is facing unprecedented challenges, balanced between the need to ensure global food security and the urgent imperative to reduce environmental impacts, mitigate climate change, and optimize resource efficiency. To address these complexities, a shift from linear perspectives to holistic, systemic approaches is paramount. Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) represents a cornerstone framework in this transition, moving beyond traditional boundaries to evaluate the comprehensive impacts of food products and processes. This Special Issue aims to gather cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews on the application of LCT methodologies across the entire agri-food value chain, including livestock and animal production systems. We welcome contributions utilizing Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to quantify ecological footprints, Life Cycle Costing (LCC) to assess economic viability and circular business models, and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) to evaluate human and societal implications. By integrating these three pillars, this Special Issue will explore how LCT can serve as an innovative driver for eco-design, waste reduction, dietary shifts, and policy formulation. For the scientific community, this collection will provide a high-level platform to bridge the gap between methodological advancements and practical applications in farming, processing, packaging, and distribution. We invite researchers to contribute original studies, case studies, and methodological frameworks that demonstrate how LCT can shape the future of sustainable, resilient, and transparent food systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
