Advances in Computer Vision for Autonomous Driving

Dear Colleagues,

The ongoing evolution of autonomous driving systems is deeply intertwined with progress in the field of computer vision, a field which enables vehicles to perceive, interpret, and interact with their environments in increasingly complex and dynamic scenarios. Advanced vision systems (powered by deep learning) are central to tasks such as object detection, semantic segmentation, depth estimation, and scene understanding, allowing for autonomous vehicles to operate safely under diverse conditions. In parallel, the integration of vision-based sensing within the broader Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem is opening new avenues for collaborative perception and edge intelligence. Moreover, aerial platforms such as drones are playing an increasing role in traffic monitoring, mapping, and infrastructure analysis, offering valuable visual data to complement and enhance ground-based autonomy.

This Special Issue, “Advances in Computer Vision for Autonomous Driving”, seeks to gather high-quality contributions that explore novel methods, algorithms, and applications at the intersection of computer vision and autonomous transportation technologies. This scope aligns with the journal’s section on Electrical and Autonomous Vehicles, and we encourage submissions that reflect both theoretical advances and practical implementations in intelligent mobility systems.

We welcome original research articles and comprehensive reviews on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

• Vision-based object detection, tracking, and classification in autonomous vehicles;
• Scene understanding, semantic segmentation, and depth estimation;
• Multisensor fusion (e.g., camera, LiDAR, radar, edge devices);
• Vision for localization, mapping, and SLAM;
• Perception under adverse weather or nighttime conditions;
• Integration of computer vision with IoT infrastructure and V2X communication;
• Drone-assisted visual sensing and traffic/environmental monitoring;
• Synthetic data generation and simulation for autonomous driving perception.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
