Scalable AI Systems: Compression, Efficiency, and Hardware-Software Co-Design
This special issue belongs to the section "Artificial Intelligence".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid growth of AI workloads—spanning large language models, graph neural networks, and data-intensive applications—has placed unprecedented demands on modern computing systems. Achieving scalability while maintaining efficiency requires innovations across the full system stack, from algorithms to hardware.
To address these challenges, there is an increasing demand for scalable and efficient AI systems that integrate innovations across algorithms, system architectures, and hardware-software co-design. Techniques such as model and data compression, communication reduction, and distributed optimization are becoming essential for efficient AI deployment. Equally important are accelerator-aware computing and heterogeneous system design, which bridge the gap between algorithmic demands and hardware capabilities. This Special Issue is organized in collaboration with the workshop "Data Compression for AI and Big Data Application" (DC4AI) at the 55th International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP 2026). Extended versions of selected workshop papers, as well as high-quality submissions from the broader research community, are welcome.
We encourage researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to submit original research and review articles on scalable AI systems, efficient machine learning infrastructures, emerging computing platforms, and hardware-software co-design for AI and big data applications. Contributions that bridge algorithms, systems, and architectures for large-scale intelligent computing are of particular interest.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
