Genetic and Molecular Characterization of Lung Cancer
This special issue belongs to the section "Molecular Cancer Biology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Historically, thoracic oncology relied on histology—essentially identifying if a tumor was "small cell" or "non-small cell" based on its physical structure. Today, that approach is seen as a starting point rather than the finish line. The field is now a molecularly guided discipline, where treatment decisions are dictated by the tumor's "genetic fingerprint." Instead of treating a broad category of patients with the same chemotherapy, doctors use Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) to identify specific drivers of the disease.
Driven by advancements in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), we have moved beyond broad classifications to identify the specific mutations, rearrangements, and copy number variations that fuel tumor progression. Today, clinical management is inextricably linked to these genomic markers, which serve as the blueprint for targeted therapies, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and immune checkpoint inhibitors.
We seek original research and reviews investigating the molecular foundations of thoracic malignancies, specifically focusing on the identification of oncogenic drivers and the biochemical mechanisms governing metastatic transformation. We welcome studies on next-generation precision therapeutics, including the clinical efficacy of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs) and the targeted delivery systems of Antibody–Drug Conjugates (ADCs). Furthermore, we place a significant emphasis on the regulatory role of microRNA (miRNA) as a "master switch" in gene expression, particularly in how these molecules modulate the therapeutic response, influence drug resistance, and reshape the tumor microenvironment to affect treatment outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cancers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
