Cover Story: My article in Encyclopedia contains two components: (1) a review of historical use of phages for basic science and medicine, and (2) the projected future use of phages in biomedicine. My own research began in the field of basic science. I then transitioned to major areas of biomedicine, that I perceived to require fundamental advances. In both my historical review and my projections, I focused on retaining the following features: directness, simplicity, molecular orientation, and data comprehensiveness. An example of this is my selective literature review of Alzheimer’s disease, including our own experimental work. The result was the disease model illustrated in the attached Graphical Abstract.
