Cover Story: If we are to understand the circumstances under which light is a determinant of human cognition in everyday life, we must develop methods to incorporate measures of light exposure and performance into ordinary life. We address this requirement with a smartphone app that we call ‘Brighter Time’. It comprises simple games testing cognitive performance, a sleep diary and captures local illuminance from the phone’s intrinsic light meter. Participants showed good compliance with instructions for data collection and could be inducted into the study remotely and with minimal researcher input. The feasibility study revealed daily variations in task performance, associations between light and visual search performance, and associations between subjective alertness and all aspects of performance. View this paper
