Cover Story: As with most engine components, the intake manifold requires a multi-objective approach right from its design phase. Apart from its geometry that plays a key role in air–fuel mixture formation and the control of organized charge motion such as tumble, it also needs to fulfill demanding strength requirements as well as thermal characteristics. Applying optical methods to study specific phenomena can provide valuable insight into ways of improving overall performance. An optically accessible manifold presents a unique design challenge, as it needs to not only fulfill its primary role but also maximize the use of various techniques. Validation of its structural integrity needs to be coupled with a procedure that can evaluate the overall compliance with component performance requirements. View this paper
