Cover Story: Electric vehicles are crucial in achieving net-zero emissions, making them a focal point of clean energy research. In this paper, we explore a vital yet often overlooked component of batteries—binders. Binders are polymeric materials that ensure strong adhesion between electrode particles and current collectors. The review paper examines different types of binders, with focus on aqueous binders, as the environmental impact of solvents used in non-aqueous binders has driven the search for eco-friendly alternatives. Additionally, this study aims to deepen the understanding of the critical role of binders in batteries by discussing about recent advancements in binder technology, including their underlying mechanisms and failure modes.
