Cover Story: Measuring unsteady hydrodynamic forces without disturbing the flow remains a central challenge in experimental fluid mechanics. This study presents an image-based framework that uses convolutional neural networks to infer the lift and drag coefficients of a circular cylinder directly from wake streakline visualizations. Tests using numerical and water-tunnel data show that streakline morphology encodes the phase and frequency of vortex shedding as well as characteristic load variations. Although transfer across flow conditions remains challenging, the models recover dominant shedding frequencies and mean force levels. The cover image illustrates this vision-based concept: evolving wake patterns pass through a residual neural network and emerge as time-resolved lift and drag estimates. View this paper
