Cover Story: E. coli O157:H7 causes severe, sometimes life-threatening infections, yet fast, decentralized detection remains elusive. This work presents a monolithic CMOS biochip integrating thiol–gold aptamer sensors with an on-chip amplifier for label-free, electrical detection of this pathogen. Tested on calibration standards, patient specimens, and hospital environmental samples, the aptasensor achieved sub-4 CFU/mL theoretical sensitivity and detected bacteria to below 30 CFU/mL in real samples, discriminating target from non-target strains within minutes. By combining semiconductor manufacturing with biosensing, this platform offers a scalable, low-power route toward point-of-care pathogen diagnostics for clinical and hospital hygiene applications. View this paper
