Cardiovascular Bioprostheses
This special issue belongs to the section "Nanobiotechnology and Biofabrication".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Cardiovascular bioprostheses represent a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of basic science, translational research, and clinical application. Advances in biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomechanics, and immunomodulation have significantly improved the performance and durability of heart valve substitutes, vascular grafts, and other cardiovascular implants. However, major challenges remain with respect to long-term functionality, biocompatibility, degeneration, and patient-specific optimization.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for cutting-edge research on cardiovascular bioprostheses, with a strong emphasis on translation and bench-to-bedside approaches. We welcome contributions spanning fundamental research, preclinical development, and clinical validation, highlighting how mechanistic insights and innovative experimental models can be effectively translated into improved therapeutic solutions. Particular attention is given to interdisciplinary strategies that integrate engineering, biology, and medicine to accelerate clinical impact.
In line with responsible and sustainable research practices, the implementation of the 3R principles (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) in cardiovascular research is emphasized. Novel in vitro models, computational approaches, and advanced testing platforms that reduce reliance on animal experiments while enhancing predictive power are especially encouraged.
By bringing together basic researchers, engineers, translational scientists, and clinicians, this Special Issue seeks to foster innovation, collaboration, and critical discussion to advance the next generation of cardiovascular bioprostheses.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
