Cover Story: Heliotropium procumbens, a Boraginaceae species native to Panama, remains understudied for nitrogen-containing metabolites, especially pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). This study presents a detailed phytochemical analysis of its aerial parts using HPLC-DAD-IT-MS, UHPLC–HRMS, and GC-MS, identifying twelve PAs and their N-oxides, along with two phenolamides including N1, N10-diferuloylspermidine and the unique heliotropamide. The PAs included unsaturated necines, mainly retronecine and heliotridine monoesters, plus saturated platynecine-type and triol necines with N-oxides. Helifoline-N-oxide was isolated and structurally characterized by NMR for the first time. Comparison within the Heliotropium genus shows high PA diversity in H. procumbens, reflecting both its biosynthetic capacity and extensive study-enriching observed chemodiversity. View this paper
