Cover Story: Emerging infrared upconversion imaging devices can directly convert low-energy infrared photons into high-energy visible light photons; thus, they are promising for accomplishing pixel-less high-resolution infrared imaging at low cost. Infrared-to-visible upconversion devices have drawn much attention these days in the fields of biomedicine, night-vision, homeland security, autonomous driving, aerospace, and so on. From the aspect of device structure, the evolution of infrared upconverters is from all-inorganic devices, all-organic devices, and hybrid inorganic–organic devices to the emergent quantum-dots-based upconversion devices. The performance of upconversion devices, such as the upconversion efficiency and sensitivity, should be improved. The wider infrared detection range is also a vital research direction in the future.
