Cover Story: The cover design represents the core idea of our research, which is the exploitation of woody biomass waste to produce bioproducts (mainly charcoal) that could replace fossil fuel utilization in metallurgical industries, helping them reduce their massive CO2 emissions. For this purpose pyrolysis has been proven as a suitable technology, however, in order to make process profitable and sustainable a proper catalytic optimization of the vapors composition is mandatory. The picture shows the characteristic closed carbon loop associated to biomass, the wastes produced from forest activities are pyrolysed and the vapors thermal-catalytically treated. The charcoal and pyro gas are then used by the metallurgical industry and finally the CO2 is fixed again by the growing plant species. View this paper.
