Cover Story: Effective weight management is crucial for improving the symptoms and quality of life of patients with knee OA, especially for those with obesity. We conducted a pilot interventional study to assess the effects of a Very Low-Calorie Ketogenic Diet (VLCKD) in obese women with symptomatic knee OA. The 16 participants who completed the study underwent a 20-week intervention that included an 8-week ketogenic phase, followed by a progressive reintroduction of carbohydrates over 12 weeks. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in body mass index and marked improvements in knee pain, stiffness, physical function, and overall health outcomes. These findings suggest that VLCKD may represent an effective therapeutic approach for obese women with knee OA, highlighting the potential of targeted dietary interventions for managing this condition. View this paper
