Cover Story: Protein consumption has increased steadily for decades. Milk protein derivatives, such as whey protein isolate, that have a high protein content are now extensively used in consumer products, with several studies showing them to have beneficial nutritional effects on satiety and protein synthesis. Although there are alternative protein products available for vegetarians and vegans, such as soy, rice, wheat and pea proteins, there is relatively less evidence on their health benefits in comparison to milk-derived proteins. This study compared the effects of milk and plant-derived proteins and showed, for the first time, that potato protein and rice protein isolates may potentially be viable alternatives to whey protein isolate, particularly in people that need to carefully monitor their glucose levels.
