Nanoformulation of Biological Therapeutics
This special issue belongs to the section "Biology and Medicines".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid advancement of biological therapeutics, including proteins, nucleic acids and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), is transforming modern medicine. However, their clinical translation is hindered by challenges in stability, delivery and manufacturability. Nanoformulation offers innovative strategies to overcome these barriers by protecting sensitive biologics, enabling targeted delivery, and improving pharmacokinetics without modifying the drug substance.
This Special Issue focuses on advanced nanocarrier systems designed for biologics and ATMPs.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Nanoformulation strategies for emerging ATMPs (cell and gene therapies, tissue-engineered products)
- Lipid-based and polymeric nanocarriers for proteins, peptides, nucleic acids and RNA therapeutics
- Nanocarrier platforms for gene editing technologies, including CRISPR-based approaches
- Hybrid, biomimetic and artificial cell-inspired nanomaterials for biologics formulation
- Extracellular vesicles and cell-derived nanocarriers
- Nanoengineered systems to enhance cell-based therapies and ATMP performance
- Nanoparticle–biomembrane interactions and mechanisms governing the nano–bio interface
- In vivo tracking, biodistribution, pharmacokinetics and safety assessment of nanoformulated biologics
- Targeted and stimuli-responsive delivery systems for biologics
- Formulation engineering to improve stability, shelf-life and manufacturability
- Advanced characterization and stability assessment of nanoformulated biologics
- Microfluidic and advanced manufacturing strategies for scalable nanocarrier production
- Scale-up, GMP manufacturing, regulatory aspects and translational development of nanoformulated biologics
We invite original research articles and critical reviews that advance fundamental understanding and translational development of nano-enabled formulations for biologically derived medicines.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
