Advances in Energy Storage Nanomaterials
This special issue belongs to the section "Energy and Catalysis".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The green transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, coupled with the increasing energy demand, mean that the development of efficient energy storage devices in the near future is becoming crucial. At the same time, we cannot ignore the imperative to explore new ways of obtaining high added value materials for energy brought about by the depletion of mineral resources and extant geopolitical instability. By way of example, the EU Critical Raw Materials Act sets, as supply targets for 2030, the extraction of raw materials from European countries at 10%, sourcing through processing at 40%, and from recycling at 25%. Given this context, nanomaterials, often showcasing enhanced and unexpected properties compared to the corresponding bulk materials, have come to play pivotal roles. This Special Issue of Nanomaterials aims to collect cutting-edge research findings in the field of advanced nanomaterials for energy storage, presenting innovative systems and smart solutions in terms of synthesis, characterization, and applications. Research topics should primarily cover, but are not limited to, the following areas of interest:
- Innovative micro- and nanomaterials for lithium-ion battery electrodes, batteries beyond lithium-ion, capacitors, etc.;
- Non-conventional electrolytes, including for solid-state applications;
- Energy storage micro- and nanomaterials from agricultural, industrial, and electronic waste;
- Sustainable energy storage devices;
- Mechanistic insights into energy storage processes;
- Advanced characterization, with special attention to in situ and operando studies;
- Computational modelling of materials for energy storage.
We solicit regular research papers, reviews, communications, and short notes from leading research groups in the abovementioned fields.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
