Structural Detailing, Durability and Mechanical Properties of Reinforced Concrete
This special issue belongs to the section "Construction and Building Materials".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
While reinforced concrete (RC) remains a fundamental pillar of the modern construction industry, contemporary engineering paradigms have shifted beyond a singular focus on structural capacity. Current research increasingly emphasizes the precision of structural detailing, long-term durability, and the development of innovative material compositions. This Special Issue seeks to consolidate scientific advancements that synergistically enhance the structural performance and environmental sustainability of reinforced concrete systems.
Robust structural design is predicated not only on rigorous theoretical computation but also on the meticulous configuration of reinforcement within critical regions. Particularly in seismic-prone areas, structural detailing serves as the primary determinant of the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete elements. Consequently, this Special Issue highlights key topics such as reinforcement anchorage mechanisms, confinement effects, beam-column joint behavior, and the integration of innovative reinforcement materials, including Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) and stainless steel, to ensure structural integrity under extreme loading conditions.
Furthermore, traditional concrete technology is undergoing a paradigm shift driven by transformative developments in material science. The emergence of nano-additives, fiber-reinforced matrices, and self-healing cementitious materials is redefining the boundaries of the field. This Special Issue will explore the mechanical properties of high-performance concretes, the structural applications of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC), and the mechanical implications of incorporating recycled or waste materials into concrete mixtures to promote a circular economy.
The resilience of reinforced concrete against deleterious environmental factors—such as chloride ingress, carbonation, and alkali-silica reactions—remains a decisive factor in governing the service life of infrastructure. By integrating durability parameters directly into the structural design phase, it is possible to significantly reduce maintenance overheads and the overall carbon footprint of the built environment. To this end, this section invites original research regarding corrosion monitoring technologies, predictive modeling for service life assessment, and advanced protective strategies against environmental degradation.
Ultimately, this Special Issue provides a multidisciplinary platform for academics, practitioners, and materials scientists to bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and practical applications. We welcome experimental, numerical, and analytical contributions that aim to advance the safety, durability, and sustainability of reinforced concrete structures for the future.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
