Dear Colleagues,
Concrete and steel are the two largest building material systems in the field of civil engineering. The evolution of their performance and technological upgrades directly impacts the service life and operational safety of engineering structures, serving as the cornerstone for the high-quality development of infrastructure. Against the backdrop of the global “dual carbon” strategy advancing in depth, the accelerated evolution of new forms of building industrialization, and major engineering projects continuously expanding into extreme service environments and toward ultra-long spans, super-high-rises, and heavy loads, the industry’s demand for green transformation, performance breakthroughs, and smart upgrades in materials is becoming increasingly urgent. Traditional building materials are undergoing a systemic transformation characterized by carbon reduction, performance leaps, and digital empowerment. At the same time, new materials are giving rise to new structural systems, while structural demands are driving improvements in material performance.
Centered on the themes of “low-carbon, high-performance, and intelligent,” this Special Issue focuses on the two core systems of concrete and steel structures. It systematically compiles cutting-edge basic research, key technological breakthroughs, and engineering applications in the fields of advanced building materials and structures, establishing an academic platform for the deep integration of materials science, civil engineering, environmental science, information science, and manufacturing engineering to drive theoretical innovation, technological breakthroughs, and industrial implementation. The scope of submissions covers (but is not limited to) the following topics:
- Low-carbon technologies for building materials and carbon sequestration pathways;
- High-performance and multifunctional building materials and structures;
- Smart building materials and intelligent sensing structures;
- Material design driven by artificial intelligence and the materials genome;
- Specialized building materials and structures for extreme service environments;
- Building materials and structures made from recycled solid waste driven by the circular economy;
- Digital construction and construction techniques for new material structures;
- Evaluation standards for green building materials and demonstration projects of their engineering applications.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
