Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The transition toward resource-efficient, digitally supported manufacturing is reshaping the design and production of metallic components. Additive manufacturing, laser-based processing, and advanced metal-forming technologies provide unprecedented freedom in geometry and material utilization, but they also introduce process-specific challenges related to anisotropy, defects, residual stresses, dimensional accuracy, surface condition, and reproducibility. Reliable integration of these technologies into industrial practice therefore requires coordinated research linking process parameters, numerical simulation, experimental characterization, and structural integrity assessment.
This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in the manufacturing and integrity evaluation of metallic components produced by additive, forming, joining, and hybrid processes. Particular emphasis is placed on process design and optimization, thermal and mechanical process simulation, defect formation, fracture and fatigue behavior, and the use of destructive and non-destructive methods for quality assurance. Contributions combining experimental investigations with computational or data-driven approaches are especially welcome, together with studies demonstrating industrial applicability.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Metal additive manufacturing and laser-based fabrication;
- Sheet- and bulk-metal forming processes;
- Joining, welding, and hybrid manufacturing technologies;
- Process simulation, digital twins, and data-driven optimization;
- Manufacturing defects, residual stresses, and dimensional accuracy;
- Fracture, fatigue, wear, and structural integrity assessment;
- Destructive and non-destructive testing and industrial metrology.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
