Dear Colleagues,
Laser-based surface engineering has emerged as one of the most versatile and precise approaches for tailoring the structural, mechanical, and functional properties of engineering materials. Techniques such as laser surface texturing, laser cladding, selective laser melting, and laser surface modification offer unique advantages over conventional surface treatment methods, including localized processing, minimal thermal distortion, high reproducibility, and the ability to generate complex micro- and nano-scale features on a wide range of substrates, including metals, alloys, ceramics, and composites.
This Special Issue, titled "Laser Engineering of Materials Surfaces", aims to bring together recent advances in the modelling, processing, and characterization of laser-engineered surfaces and coatings. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the relationship between laser processing parameters and the resulting surface morphology, microstructure, and performance characteristics such as wear resistance, adhesion, and functional behavior. Studies addressing laser process optimization, including statistical and computational approaches to parameter selection, are especially welcome, as they contribute to the development of more efficient and reliable laser-based manufacturing strategies.
We invite original research articles and comprehensive reviews covering, but not limited to, the following topics: laser surface texturing and its effect on surface functionality; laser cladding and laser-deposited functional coatings; selective laser melting and additive manufacturing of surface features; laser-induced changes in surface morphology and microstructure; laser-enhanced wear resistance; and optimization strategies for laser surface engineering processes.
This Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive platform for researchers and engineers to share their findings and foster collaboration across the fields of materials science, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing technology.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
