Modern Technologies in Metallurgical Manufacturing

Dear Colleagues,

Metallurgical manufacturing is generally concerned with the production and fabrication of metallic materials, which represent a major class of engineering materials produced and consumed in mass quantities by humans. In the modern era of science and technology, many novel metallurgical manufacturing processes have emerged, such as additive manufacturing, severe plastic deformation, rapid solidification, new powder sintering, and consolidation processes such as spark plasma sintering, the thermomechanical consolidation of powders, hydrogen reduction of metal oxides for the direct production of iron and steel, and the solid-state recycling of metals. At the same time, several types of new metallic materials have also emerged, some of which are already undergoing mass production, and the remaining are awaiting large-scale commercialization. These include novel metallic materials with nanostructures, ultrafine grained structures, heterostructures or amorphous structures, as well as high-entropy alloys consisting of multiple principal components. Modern metallurgical manufacturing is becoming increasingly more objective-based, focusing on either maximizing the materials’ performance through optimizing their composition and microstructure at a given cost or minimizing the energy consumption and environmental impact involved in producing materials with sufficient properties for targeted applications.

This Special Issue of Materials on modern technologies in metallurgical manufacturing invited and contributed peer-reviewed research papers on various topics addressing the above aspects. It is expected that this volume will make an important contribution to the intellectual power of modern science in this important area of materials science and engineering.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
