Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The role of bacterial, viral, and fungal commensals and pathogens in oral health and diseases, together with their genetic, biochemical, and ecological characteristics, represents a deeply interesting scientific area. Investigations into the oral microbial dynamics related to physiology, pathophysiology, and pathology processes can contribute to a better understanding of emerging trends in oral health and in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) development. By exploring these dynamics, this Special Issue will offer evidence-based practices in antibiotic rational use and antibiotic stewardship regarding oral health. Through sharing insights and results, we aim to provide a deeper understanding of the microbial flora in the oral cavity, the mechanisms behind microbial interactions, and their relationships with oral diseases, such as dental caries, periodontal disease, oral infections, and other pathologies of the oral cavity. The oral microbiota has been linked to the development of systemic diseases, cancer, and dementia. We welcome the discussion of optimal oral health care practices that balance effective infection management with the minimization of antibiotic resistance, ensuring better patient outcomes in both dental and broader health care contexts. Addressing appropriate antibiotic use in dentistry and general medicine can aid in preventing the development and spread of resistant organisms. This Special Issue will provide an interdisciplinary platform for the exploration of oral health issues, with a focus on oral microbial dynamics and the rational use of antibiotics in dental care.

The scope of this Special Issue includes original research articles, case studies, systemic reviews, and clinical guidelines related to microbial ecology in the oral cavity, infection control practices, diagnostic technologies, and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives and strategies. Contributions may explore topics such as the molecular mechanisms behind microbial pathogenesis and the impact of antibiotics, other therapies and treatments, and different circumstances on the oral microbiota, as well as strategies for managing antimicrobial stewardship through targeted, evidence-based approaches.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Life is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
