Exploring the Functional Activity of Natural Products
This special issue belongs to the section “Bioactives and Nutraceuticals“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Natural products continue to serve as an exceptional source of structurally diverse bioactive compounds with wide-ranging pharmacological and therapeutic properties. Despite the tremendous progress achieved in the field of synthetic and combinatorial chemistry, naturally derived molecules remain a cornerstone in modern drug discovery and biomedical research.
This Special Issue aims to explore recent advances in the isolation, characterization, and mechanistic exploration of natural compounds with significant biological activities.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, and short communications that focus on the chemical characterization, biological activity, molecular targets, and potential therapeutic applications of natural compounds derived from plants, marine organisms, fungi, and microorganisms.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Isolation, identification, and structural elucidation of bioactive compounds;
- Mechanistic insights into the bioactivity, signaling pathways, and molecular targets of natural products;
- In vitro, in vivo, and in silico approaches to assessing functional activity;
- Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties of natural extracts and metabolites;
- Bioavailability studies and clinical studies of natural products;
- Synergistic effects with conventional drugs;
- Ethnopharmacological studies and validation of traditional medicinal uses;
- Applications in nutraceuticals, functional foods, and cosmeceuticals.
With this Special Issue, we aim to provide a platform for interdisciplinary contributions from pharmacognosy, biochemistry, molecular biology, and related fields, aiming to deepen our understanding of how natural products can be developed into effective therapeutic agents.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
