Innovations in Electromagnetic Field Measurements and Applications

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to gather high-quality original research articles, reviews, and technical notes that report recent advances in electromagnetic measurements and applications in the whole electromagnetic field (EMF) spectrum, focusing on novel and innovative approaches and techniques in both public and occupational settings.

Measurements across the entire electromagnetic field spectrum (from 0 Hz to 300 GHz) are performed for several purposes, e.g., assessment of human exposure to EMFs, assessing compliance with EMF exposure limits, defining characteristics of products and services, and even material characterization.

Electromagnetic applications play a significant role in our lives and encompass a diverse range of technologies crucial in daily life, from energy and telecommunications to medical imaging and applications. Νovel usages of electromagnetic fields have appeared as emerging wireless applications and services (e.g., Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, 6G) across different industry verticals, including the healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and automotive sectors. For example, concepts of smart cities, factories and transportation are expected to improve user benefits, leading to a new world of connectivity but also in a new electromagnetic environment. Accordingly, the characteristics of human exposure to electromagnetic fields will continue to change over time with the deployment of new technologies and concepts (e.g., 5G MaMIMO base stations with beamforming for FR1 and FR2 bands, industry 4.0 applications, electric vehicles, wireless power transfer and charging facilities), imposing the need to develop new measurement devices and techniques to demonstrate compliance with international EMF standards and guidelines. These new concepts and highlights will add to the existing scientific literature and inform the development of new standards.

This Special Issue welcomes contributions from colleagues working in this field. Authors are encouraged to send a short abstract briefly explaining the purpose and content of their research to verify that it fits within the objectives of this Special Issue. These objectives are better outlined in the topics given below.

These topics include but are not limited to the following:

• Novel EMF measurement techniques, sensors, tools and protocols in emerging applications and scenarios;
• Novel instrumentation, test and validation procedures required to demonstrate compliance of electronic devices (i.e., FR2-enabled 5G) with the safety guidelines;
• Novel EMF monitoring devices, systems and techniques for characterization of personal and environmental exposures in public and occupational settings; 
• Design and use of novel sensors/devices for electromagnetic measurements and applications;
• EMF measurements and applications in smart cities and smart factories, 5G technologies, electric vehicles, wireless power transfer and charging facilities;
• EMF measurements and applications in the energy and healthcare sectors, industry 4.0 applications and industrial settings in manufacturing and automotive sectors.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
