Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) remains a core technological foundation of modern industrial systems, but the transition toward Industry 5.0 demands a fundamental shift from connectivity-driven automation to cognitive, autonomous, and trustworthy industrial systems. While IIoT technologies have matured, their deployment in large-scale and mission-critical environments continues to face significant challenges related to real-time and deterministic operation, scalability, security and trustworthiness, interoperability, and the coordinated management of communication, computation, and control. Much of the existing research addresses these challenges in isolation, falling short of the holistic and system-level perspectives required by next-generation industrial systems.

This Special Issue aims to provide a focused forum for advanced research and engineering solutions that position IIoT as an enabler of intelligent, resilient, and human-aware industrial systems in the era of Industry 5.0. The scope includes next-generation IIoT architectures, advanced industrial networking, edge and distributed intelligence, data-centric automation, and AI-enabled industrial control. Particular emphasis is placed on emerging paradigms such as AI-native industrial systems, digital twins for real-time operation, trustworthy and explainable AI, time-sensitive and deterministic communication, and the convergence of communication, sensing, and computation. 

The Special Issue seeks contributions that combine theoretical rigor with experimental validation and industrial relevance, promoting cross-layer and interdisciplinary approaches to address the complex requirements of cognitive and autonomous industrial systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • AI-native Industrial IoT architectures and autonomous industrial systems;
  • Edge-native artificial intelligence and federated learning for IIoT;
  • Digital twins for real-time industrial monitoring, control, and optimization;
  • Time-sensitive and deterministic networking for mission-critical industrial systems;
  • Private 5G, beyond-5G, and 6G-ready industrial communications;
  • Integrated sensing, communication, and computation in IIoT systems;
  • Trustworthy, explainable, and verifiable AI for industrial automation;
  • AI-driven anomaly detection, intrusion detection, and cyber resilience in IIoT;
  • Large language and foundation models for reasoning and orchestration in industrial systems;
  • Quantum and hybrid quantum–classical optimization for industrial IoT and cyber–physical systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
