Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a foundational technology for emerging applications such as the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, industrial automation, and healthcare systems. Despite their broad adoption, WSNs face critical challenges related to energy constraints, computational limitations, and security vulnerabilities. The design of secure communication protocols and energy-efficient mechanisms remains a key research focus, particularly for resource‑constrained sensor nodes operating in hostile or unattended environments.

This Special Issue will bring together state‑of‑the‑art research and practical innovations that address the dual challenges of security and energy efficiency in WSNs. We particularly encourage contributions that propose cross‑layer designs, lightweight cryptography, energy‑aware security mechanisms, and real‑world experimental validation.

Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lightweight cryptographic algorithms for WSNs;
  • Energy‑aware secure routing protocols;
  • Secure data aggregation and fusion techniques;
  • Secure communication and intrusion detection in WSNs;
  • Authentication and key management in low‑power sensor networks;
  • Trust, intrusion detection, and anomaly detection mechanisms;
  • Physical‑layer security techniques for WSNs;
  • Cross‑layer optimization for security and energy efficiency;
  • Secure MAC and duty‑cycling protocols;
  • Blockchain and distributed ledger techniques for WSN security;
  • AI‑ and ML‑based security solutions for low‑power sensor nodes;
  • Energy harvesting and secure power‑aware communication;
  • Privacy preservation in WSN‑based IoT systems;
  • Secure localization and time synchronization;
  • Real‑world implementations, testbeds, and experimental evaluations;

Case studies in smart cities, healthcare, industrial IoT, and critical infrastructures.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
