Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to advance state-of-the-art research at the intersection of intelligent human–computer interaction (HCI), electronic systems and artificial-intelligence-enabled hardware–software co-design. It focuses on emerging electronic technologies, circuits, embedded systems, sensing platforms and AI-driven computational methods that enable next-generation interactive, adaptive and human-centered systems.

Recent progress in electronics, edge intelligence, wearable and flexible devices, smart sensors, bioelectronics and AI circuits has transformed how humans interact with machines and environments. Modern HCI systems increasingly rely on tightly integrated electronic components, including low-power processors, intelligent sensors, wireless modules and real-time signal-processing hardware, combined with machine/deep-learning algorithms deployed on edge and embedded platforms. These advances enable pervasive computing, augmented and virtual reality, affective computing, healthcare monitoring, assistive technologies, robotics and autonomous systems.

This Special Issue seeks original contributions that present novel AI-integrated electronic designs, circuits, architectures, algorithms and system implementations supporting intelligent and interactive technologies. Emphasis is placed on practical electronic realizations, experimental validation and complete system integration, consistent with the journal’s focus on both theoretical and applied electronics research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Intelligent sensing systems and smart sensor electronics for HCI
  • Edge AI hardware, embedded intelligence and low-power computing architectures
  • AI circuits and systems (AICAS) for perception and interaction
  • Wearable, flexible and bioelectronic devices for healthcare and assistive technologies
  • Signal processing and multimodal data fusion for human behavior understanding
  • Brain–computer interfaces, physiological computing and neuro-electronics
  • Augmented/virtual/mixed reality hardware platforms and real-time interactive electronics
  • Human-centered robotics and autonomous interactive systems
  • IoT-enabled interactive environments and smart spaces
  • Wireless and networked electronics for pervasive and mobile interaction
  • Energy-efficient, battery-less and sustainable electronic designs
  • FPGA/ASIC implementations for AI acceleration in HCI applications
  • Cyber–physical systems and real-time embedded control
  • Security, privacy and trustworthy electronics for interactive systems
  • Electronic multimedia systems and immersive communication technologies
  • Case studies, prototypes and industrial applications of intelligent interactive electronics.

We cordially invite researchers, engineers and practitioners from academia and industry to submit high-quality original manuscripts reporting experimental results, novel AI-integrated hardware designs, system implementations and methodological advances.

This Special Issue is organized in conjunction with the 18th International Conference on Intelligent Human–Computer Interaction (IHCI 2026). Extended versions of selected papers from IHCI 2026 are strongly encouraged, and independent original submissions are also welcome, provided that all manuscripts present substantial extensions beyond any previously published conference papers and align with the scope of this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
