New Advances in Edge Computing and Its Latest Applications
This special issue belongs to the section "Computer Science & Engineering".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Edge computing has emerged as a transformative paradigm for 6G and intelligent systems, shifting data processing from cloud centers to network edges to address the ultra-low latency, high reliability, and privacy preservation demands of emerging applications. With the proliferation of IoT devices, autonomous systems, and real-time services, edge computing has evolved beyond basic task offloading—integrating AI, 5G/6G, and reconfigurable technologies to enable distributed, intelligent, and energy-efficient computing architectures. Despite remarkable progress, challenges remain, including dynamic resource scheduling, heterogeneous edge-node collaboration, and seamless cloud–edge integration. The rapid innovation in this field not only bridges the gap between cloud computing and end devices but also unlocks new potential applications in smart cities, industrial IoT, and wearable technologies, making it a core focus of academia and industry.
This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge advances in edge computing theories, algorithms, and systems, as well as their latest practical applications. It seeks to supplement the existing literature by highlighting interdisciplinary integrations and real-world deployment insights. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- AI/ML-driven intelligent resource scheduling for edge computing;
- Edge–cloud collaborative computing and task offloading optimization;
- Energy-efficient edge computing for battery-constrained IoT nodes;
- Edge computing security, privacy preservation, and trust mechanisms;
- UAV/RIS-aided edge computing deployment in dynamic scenarios;
- Edge computing for industrial IoT and smart manufacturing;
- Lightweight edge computing frameworks for wearable/embedded devices;
- Edge computing-enabled real-time services (autonomous driving, AR/VR);
- Heterogeneous edge network integration with 5G/6G and massive MIMO;
- Edge computing prototype implementation and field trial validation;
- Satellite-edge integrated computing architectures for global coverage;
- LEO satellite-assisted edge computing for remote area services.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
