Recent Advances in Semiconductor Heterojunctions: Materials, Interfaces and Devices

Semiconductor heterojunctions constitute a foundational platform for modern electronic and optoelectronic devices, enabling functionalities that cannot be achieved in single-material systems. Recent advances in materials synthesis, interface engineering and heterogeneous integration have significantly expanded the design space of heterojunction devices, particularly across ultrawide-bandgap, wide-bandgap and narrow-bandgap semiconductors. These developments are driving breakthroughs in high-power electronics, photonics, sensing and energy applications.

This Special Issue aims to highlight recent progress in semiconductor heterojunctions, with a focus on the interplay between materials, interfaces and device performance. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, novel heterostructure materials, band alignment engineering, interface defect control, wafer-scale heterogeneous integration, membrane-based device architectures and emerging device concepts enabled by unconventional material combinations. Both experimental and theoretical contributions are welcome.

This collection seeks to provide a timely platform that bridges fundamental understanding and technological implementation. It complements the existing literature by emphasizing cross-material integration strategies and interface-driven device physics, which are increasingly critical in overcoming lattice mismatch, thermal constraints and scaling limitations. By bringing together contributions from diverse material systems and application domains, this Special Issue will offer a comprehensive perspective on the future directions of semiconductor heterojunction research.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
