Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue aims to highlight the current trends in the field of mathematical modeling in education with the use of digital tools. This includes issues such as the following:

  • The epistemology of mathematical modeling and the relationship between mathematics and the "other world";
  • The transition from pure mathematics to the applied mathematics that has meaning to students;
  • Authentic problem situations, the authenticity of modeling and applications in mathematics education;
  • Documentation of the implementation of mathematical modeling in education;
  • Teacher training in mathematical modeling;
  • The use and the role of digital tools in the teaching of mathematical modeling;
  • The balance between modeling activities and other mathematical activities;
  • The concept of "mathematical literacy" in relation to mathematical modeling;
  • Pedagogical approaches and strategies for developing mathematical modeling courses;
  • The mathematical abilities that students can acquire in relation to mathematical modeling;
  • How modeling activities and the use of digital tools can help build mathematical abilities;
  • Assessment methods that demonstrate modeling ability;
  • The inclusion of modeling in the curricula

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Education Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

The Traveling Salesman and Vehicle Routing Problems are integral parts of bachelor and master programs related to Operations Research/Management Science. This is due to their relevance in both practical applications and research. For students, it is essential to gain a deep understanding of the problems’ inherent complexity. For this, several tools are available online. A systematic classification of both the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) and Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) teaching material is provided and discussed. This classification takes target groups as well as learning objectives into account. Recommended choices depending on the teaching context are provided. A special focus lies on interactive visualizations, which seem to be most useful for supporting students in their solution-oriented competencies. We observe that didactic visualization tools for vehicle routing are scarce. This is surprising since, in practice, this problem is prevalent. Full article
