Superhydrophobic and Superhydrophilic Surface Coatings
This special issue belongs to the section "Surface Characterization, Deposition and Modification".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
From an applied perspective, this Special Issue, "Superhydrophobic and Superhydrophilic Surface Coatings", unified under the concept of superwettability, aims at the development of self-cleaning, anti-corrosive, anti-fouling, and anti-fogging surfaces, as well as surfaces with amphiphilic and amphiphobic characteristics, among others, along with multifunctional surfaces associated with these properties. Theoretical modeling, together with experimental and empirical understanding, can lead to new methods and designs for the fabrication of such surfaces, favoring production and enabling new applications.
Computer simulation plays an important role in understanding microscopic phenomena and in correlating them with the macroscopic perspective. AI is emerging as a powerful tool capable of predicting wettability and designing multifunctional films, in addition to its capacity to generate metadata. Durability and environmental friendliness are critical factors for industrial application; in this context, self-healing and regenerative structures, fluorine-free surfaces, and enhanced mechanical and thermal resistance and chemical stability are currently gaining prominence.
I kindly invite all colleagues interested in this highly relevant topic to contribute to this Special Issue.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Fundamentals of superwetting and superwettability;
- Modeling, simulation, and AI-driven design;
- Advanced and scalable fabrication methods;
- Fluorine-free and sustainable coating chemistries;
- Durability, self-healing, and mechanical/chemical resistance;
- Self-cleaning, anti-fouling, anti-corrosive, and anti-fogging surfaces;
- Anti-icing, drag reduction, and drop manipulation;
- Oil–water separation, condensation heat transfer, and water harvesting;
- Biomedical, photocatalytic, and energy-related applications;
- Characterization, metrology, and standardization;
- Industrial scalability and environmental impact.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
