Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Thermal barrier coatings are critical components in high-temperature applications, directly influencing the performance, energy efficiency and operational lifespan of machinery operating under severe thermal and environmental stress, such as gas turbines, aerospace engines and advanced power generation plants. Developing next-generation metallic alloys and ceramic materials tailored for these systems—whether as high-performance substrates, bond coats or integrated thermal protection layers—is essential to withstand higher operating temperatures, aggressive oxidation and cyclic thermal fatigue without degrading structural integrity.

In recent years, significant progress has been made in the design, synthesis and processing of advanced metallic and ceramic systems, including refractory high-entropy alloys, single-crystal superalloys and other materials. Furthermore, novel manufacturing methods, such as additive manufacturing, have enabled unprecedented control over microstructure and the fabrication of complex geometries. However, optimizing phase stability, thermal expansion compatibility and long-term environmental resistance remains a crucial challenge for materials scientists and high-temperature surface engineers.

This Special Issue aims to gather cutting-edge research, innovative design strategies and fundamental insights into next-generation metallic and ceramic materials developed for thermal barrier coating. We welcome high-quality research papers and review articles that bridge the gap between fundamental materials design, advanced processing and real-world industrial applications demanding extreme thermal protection.

In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Bond coat design and alloy–ceramic interface interactions

  • Microstructural evolution and phase stability at elevated temperatures

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
