Dear Colleagues,
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) constitute a vast and fascinating area of research. EVs are key players in numerous biological processes, from physiological cell-to-cell communication to the spread of disease under pathological conditions. In the context of neurodegeneration, EVs have been described both as contributors to disease pathogenesis and as carriers of neuroprotective molecules, depending on their origin. This duality underscores their exciting potential for biomarker discovery, diagnosis, and therapeutic innovation. Moreover, interactions between EVs and the Extracellular Matrix (ECM) critically shape the former’s ability to influence target cells under diverse conditions, adding another layer of complexity to their multifunctional role in the brain.
This Special Issue invites cutting-edge research on EVs in neurodegeneration, with a focus on their role in pathogenesis, their function as disease biomarkers, their interactions with the brain ECM microenvironment, and their potential as drug delivery systems for therapeutic interventions.
