Cellular and Molecular Basis of Sjögren’s Syndrome

Sjögren disease stands at the crossroads of immunology, molecular biology, and clinical medicine—a complex disorder where epithelial cells, lymphocytes, and cytokine networks weave a pathological tapestry of autoimmunity. Over the past decade, remarkable advances in single-cell technologies, transcriptomics, and immunophenotyping have unveiled new dimensions of the disease, from the role of epithelial-immune crosstalk and interferon-driven signatures to novel autoantibody profiles and B-cell dysregulation. Yet, the precise mechanisms translating molecular aberrations into clinical heterogeneity remain elusive.

This Special Issue seeks to recapitulate the cellular and molecular foundations of Sjögren disease, exploring how immune tolerance breaks down, how specific signaling pathways sustain inflammation, and how molecular insights can guide precision therapeutics. 

We welcome original research, translational studies, and comprehensive reviews addressing immune cell biology, epithelial dysfunction, cytokine signaling, omics integration, and biomarker discovery.

By gathering the latest work from leading experts and emerging investigators alike, this collection aims to bridge bench and bedside—fostering a deeper understanding of Sjögren disease as not merely a glandular disorder, but a systemic model of chronic autoimmunity.
