Cover Story: Fukushima’s agricultural soils continue to face challenges after the 2011 nuclear disaster, as decontamination removed fertile surface soil with radiocesium. We investigated whether biological amendments could restore crop productivity in these soils. Pot and field experiments evaluated Bacillus- and Aspergillus-based (kouji) amendments for effects on growth, mineral nutrition, and seed yield of Perilla frutescens. Kouji enhanced plant growth, increasing leaf number by 112% and biomass production, while increasing total nitrogen and iron accumulation by 170% and 194%, respectively. However, field responses were limited and site-dependent. These findings highlight the potential of kouji amendment to improve crop productivity in decontaminated Fukushima soils and the need to optimize its application under heterogeneous field conditions. View this paper
