Cover Story: The presence of the black spot disease associated with a digenean fluke of the genus Scaphanocephalus was observed in Xyrichthys novacula from Ibiza Island (Balearic Islands, Spain). The infection induced a progressive decrease in the body condition index. The activity of the antioxidant enzymes in the mucus increased with the degree of infection, although this was not enough to prevent oxidative damage in the group with greater infection. An increase in immunological parameters was also observed in mucus and spleen as infection increased. The potential health effects that the ectoparasite may have on X. novacula populations require follow-up studies. View this paper
