Cover Story: Brands are discussed across social media platforms, on news sites and, increasingly, by AI assistants, yet the industry still prices that coverage with methods that it has publicly disowned. Most Earned Media Value calculations multiply reach or engagement by undisclosed coefficients. A viral attack on a company can be reported to management as a financial gain, while digital coverage that generates no clicks is valued at nothing. This study replaces these hidden multipliers with two open instruments. The Mention Quality and Impact score rates each mention according to sentiment, source credibility, engagement intensity and AI visibility on a 1–10 scale. Mention Earned Media Value converts that score into a monetary figure measured against CPM benchmarks. View this paper
