Cover Story: How do language models capture gender ideologies from the past? Modern embeddings, trained on contemporary texts, often project today’s semantic structures onto historical documents, distorting period-specific social meanings. We propose TIDES (Temporally Informed Distillation of Embedding Semantics), a framework that combines continued pretraining on dated corpora with feature-level distillation from large embedding teachers. TIDES transfers historically situated ideological structures into small BERT-based student models. This work advances a representation-centered account of modeling ideology in diachronic NLP, showing that effective historical semantic transfer requires not just temporal grounding but also representational compatibility between teacher and student. View this paper
