2022 February - 103 articles

Cover Story: Situated in a charming village in the Périgord, the Romanesque church of Saint-Martin-de-Besse presents a fascinating west façade, with a portal composed of biblical narratives and the figure of Saint Eustace. Treated as unstable polysemic texts carved in stone, and with a focus on time and space—both the terrestrial and the liturgical—I argue that the narrative vignettes of Besse offer a global and stabilized narrative plot, made possible through overarching chiastic interchanges. Ultimately, I propose that, like the cyclicity of liturgy encompassing rites, gestures, texts, sacraments, and temporal successions, the performative sculptural program of Besse involves memory, the experience of the present, and the hope of a redemptive future in which its viewers become active protagonists in the history, time, and space of the Church.
