Cover Story: Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of death in the Western world. Since current risk stratification systems fail to identify all subjects at high risk, there is an unmet need for more precise risk assessment. P-selectin plays an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis by mediating leukocyte rolling along the vessel wall. A secreted form, soluble P-selectin, circulates in plasma and has been proposed as a cardiovascular biomarker. Peripheral atherosclerosis can be quantified by measuring the plaque volume in the carotid and femoral artery using three-dimensional ultrasound. The progression of plaque volume is paralleled by increasing soluble P-selectin plasma levels. The inclusion of serial measurements of P-selectin into prediction scores like the ESC-SCORE has the potential to further improve risk stratification. View this paper
