Cover Story: Human lymphatic filariae employ immune evasion strategies to ensure their long-term survival in a host, which includes regulation of pattern recognition receptors, glycan mimicry, innate and adaptive immune response manipulation, effector immune cell apoptosis, and free radical neutralization. This results in a modified Th2 immune response with an anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory milieu in the host. Deciphering the mechanisms of immune modulation by filarial proteins will provide the information that can be used to design new strategies, not only for the treatment of filariasis and other infections, but also for the treatment of immunopathological diseases.
