Cover Story: Tunable terahertz functional devices have exhibited superior performances due to the use of active materials, such as liquid crystals, graphene, and semiconductors. Unlike other phase change materials, vanadium dioxide (VO2) undergoes an insulator–metal phase transition, causing its conductivity to change by five orders of magnitude. This article demonstrates a terahertz active switching using hybrid VO2 metamaterials. Simulations show the highly temperature-sensitive nature of Fano resonances that can be switched at very low external thermal pumping (68 °C). The findings of this work would enable thermally-induced high-Q Fano resonance metamaterials for ultrasensitive sensors, modulators, and low threshold switching in metadevices.View this paper.
